DENTISTRY

BIOMEDICAL WASTE :

  • Biomedical waste is defined as any type of waste generated in :

  1. Diagnosis
  2. Treatment
  3. Immunisation of human being /animal in a) research,b)production of biological products 
  • It also includes waste coming out of medical treatment given at home 

UNIVERSAL PRECAUTION:

  • To minimise the infection in medical laboratory workers and health care personnel
1) Gloves: while handling blood and body fluid specimen
2) Laboratory coat /gown
3) All blood specimen placed in leak proof impervious bag for transportation to the laboratory 



CATEGORIES OF BIOMEDICAL WASTE :

1) YELLOW- Infectious waste
2) RED- Contaminated waste 
3) WHITE- Waste sharp including metal
4)BLUE - Sharps 

WASTE GENERATED IN DENTAL PRACTISE:

  1. Anatomic,non-anatomic
  2. Silver containing waste used fixer solution and unused x-ray film
  3. Lead containing waste -lead apron,lead foils inside x-ray film
  4. Mercury containing waste -element mercury,scrap amalgam
  5. Chemical ,disinfectant and sterilising agents


AIM OF THIS POST :

  • Today being june 5th is world environment day 
  • Initiative for encouraging worldwide protection of our environment 
  • 2021 theme : ecosystem restoration 

ROLE OF DENTIST IN ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION:

  • According to statistics ,dentist alone are responsible for dumping 3.7 tons of mercury,1.7 billion sterilisation pouches,28 million toxic x -ray fixer.
  • Serious threat to the environment
  • Measure that can be taken to reduce harmful waste

1) Dental amalgam
widely used,long lasting restorative material 
precapsulated dental amalgam with amalgamator 




2) Digital radiograph
3) Led light to be used instead of incandescent bulb 
4) Colour -coded bags
Rethink these 3 RS

RECYCLE
REDUCE
REUSE
