         ZINC POLYCARBOXYLATE  CEMENT 

INTRODUCTION:

  • Zinc polycarboxylate cement s also known as zinc polyalkalonic acid or zinc polyacrylate .
  • Zinc polycarboxylate cement has good thermal insulation property 
  • ADA SPECIFICATION NUMBER for zinc polycarboxylate cement is 96
  • It can be used as cavity liner or base for amalgam restoration where cavity with remaining dentin thickness greater than 0.5mm.

1)COMPOSITION:

POWDER - ZINC OXIDE  (90%),MAGNESIUM OXIDE (10%) STANNIC OXIDE may be substituted in the place of magnesium oxide ,BISMUTH OXIDE ,ALUMINUM OXIDE .

LIQUID - Polyacrylic acid, Itaconic acid and other un saturated tricarboxylic acid  

2)POWDER /LIQUID RATIO :

  • Restorative purpose : 1:1
  • Luting purpose :1:2

3)SETTING REACTION :

  • Surface dissolution of powder by acid releasing ,binds to polymer chain via carboxyl group further react to carboxylic group of adjacent polyacid chain .

4)SETTING REACTION TIME :6-9 MINUTES

5)WORKING TIME :2.5 MINUTES 

6)MANIPULATION :

  • Powder /liquid is dispersed in a glass slab ,powder rapidly gets incorporated in large quantities .

7)APPLICATION OF ZINC POLYCARBOXYLATE CEMENT :

  • LUTING 
  • Cementation of stainless steel crown 
  • Restoration of decayed tooth 

8)BIOLOGICAL PROPERTY :

  • Less pulpal retention due to increased particle size of cement particle than the diameter of dentinal tubule .





9)BOND FORMATION :

  • Zinc polycarboxylate cement bond through ionic bond as polycarboxylate group react with calcium present in enamel and dentin ,bond strength more to enamel when compared to dentin .

10)TYPE OF CEMENT REACTION :

ACID-BASE type of reaction 

11)MECHANICAL PROPERTIES :

COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH :55MPA

TENSILE STRENGTH: 6.2MPA

ELASTIC MODULUS :5.1GPA

PULP RESPONSE :MILD

pH:1.6 ( LESS ACIDIC THAN ZINC PHOSPHATE)

TIME TO PROCEED :3-6
